 The importance of sound in a movie

The importance of sound is often neglected by film audiences, as film is often seen as a visual medium, however all it takes is one click of the mute button to make the viewer realize how much films depend on sound to transmit emotion. There are many reasons why sound is so vital in film making and they are. Sound is a great way for the director to introduce the tone and genre of a movie as viewers have come to associate specific music types to certain genres. Action, for example, usually contain a fast-paced opening song with the sound of vehicles or someone running. The audience will instantly know what type of film they are watching and immediately become more familiar to the movie

Ambient Sound- Background sound pressure level at the given location

Score - Part of the opening sequences soundtrack

Voice-over - Piece of a narration.

Dubbing - Mixed recordings added onto the original soundtrack

Foley - Everyday sound effects which are added to the film 

Synchronous - Sound matched to movement in the scene.

Asynchronous- Sound that contrasts an image.

Sound bridge - Sound connecting two scenes.

Sound Motif - Sound effects which are associated with a particular character, setting or situation

Genre conventions

Comedy

There are a lot of genre conventions in comedy. In comedy there are actors that are genre tropes in comedy such as Jim Carey who features in a lot of funny films. When you see Jim Carey name, you instantly know that the movie has a comedy side to it because Jim Carey featured in funny movies such as Bruce Almighty.

Action

There are many genre tropes in action films too. You see the same actors feature in different action movies. Tom cruise features in movies full of action such as Mission Impossible and Top gun. Seeing Tom cruise in the opening or advert you instantly know the movie is going to be action packed. There are other actors such as Vin diseal who also features in a lot of action movies and is heavily connected with action movies. In action movies you see genre tropes such as shootouts, weapons and car chases.

Macro analysis

The key plot is too show Pablo escobar was a powerful man with a lot of resources that had a lot of enemies including the government. The order the story line was that it showed how Pablo first his business by exporting drugs to america and as the the film goes on, Pablo gets more rich and powerful. The characters introduced are Pablo Escobar and his friends. The officer and government officials. Pablo and his friends are displayed not as a criminals, there displayed as rich people having fun and the officer and his people are displayed as serious.

What is genre?

Genre is used in media to categorize different sorts of media forms so that the audience have an idea of what there watching. Film makers tend to make movies with the most popular genres such as comedy, thriller and action. There are also sub genres which is when there's a genre in a genre so for example, in the genre of horror, a sub genre would be sci-fi

.
 I like genres such as gangster films. In this picture, it is clear and obvious what the genre of this movie is. Its clear its gangster because of the scene layout. In the picture you can see people with guns in suits with a lot of money and alcohol around who look like there committing a robbery. Another giveaway is that gangster films made in the 90's or 80's tend to have gangsters with class who were suits with the car and woman and are most likely Italian.

I also like the genre comedy because I love a film that can make you laugh when your angry or upset. The genre comedy is a very popular genre nowadays because a lot of people favor films that can make you laugh rather than scare you. One of my favorite comedy films is Big mommas house. I personally think this is the funniest film to be created and one of the best films to be released ever.

I also like the genre action as i love films that gets you out of your chair full of excitement. My favorite action movie to date is fast and furious. I really enjoy this movie as its very exciting and funny at the same time.

Pick a fav film and analyse

The film I have chosen to analyse is Titanic. The title sequence starts of with titles over moving images and integrates slowly on to titles using animation or/and motion.
There is a clear contrast between the images which are being used and font of the credits. the images are in slow motion with a added sepia filter on them to give a simple but effective tone to the film, whilst the font is very straight bold and simple, this integrates the title sequence.
This also adds a certain harsh tone which disfigures the motion of the pictures, this is done to show the narrative or storyline of the film. It is also done to foreshadow the these harsh events which are going to be present in the filmThe music also compliments the moving images to add a soft tone to the film, it also makes the film dramatic and enhances the atmosphere of the film.
The music also synchronises with moving pictures, this adds tone of the genres of the film (romance) as it creates a mellow atmosphere.

The title 'TITANIC' fades away at the end to foreshadow the plot of the film and to also question the prior knowledge that the audience has about the film and its context.The text is in white and outlined with a gold colour to create a classy feel to the film, the gold especially reminds of the boat/ship as the sepia filter on the previous shots emphasises this.

22 Jump Street (2014) — Art of the Title
The title sequence makes it clear what the genre of the movie is through portraying scenes that are funny and will catch the attention of the viewer. In the title sequence, it shows you the two main characters going undercover in different schools and countries, this reflects the movie because in the movie, there are cops going undercover at a school. It also makes clear the big stars they have featuring such Channing Tatum and Ice cube.

The title sequence has a lot of elements that suggest that its a scifi to do with time as the police box twirls into time. The title sequence contains iconic things such as the theme song and the time tunnel.

'Watching' documentary 

 Thomas Sutcliffe says "films need to seduce their audience into long term commitment.While there are many types of seduction, the temptation to go far instant arousal is almost irresistible". What he means is that the film openings are very important as the audience expectations are needed to be met for all genres.

Director Jean Jacques Beineix argues that the risks of instant arousal is that the viewers often have high expectations of a film due to a good beginning but by the end of the film they feel let down because the beginning had so much time and money put into it that the end comes out disappointing because so much time and money was put into the beginning . They wanted to draw attention in the beginning but because of instant arousal the audience were pleased in the end.

The reason why"A good beginning must make the audience feel that it doesn't know nearly enough yet and at the same time make sure that it doesn't know too little" is in order to keep the audience excited. They give away enough of the plot to show the audience and this will allow them to gain interest, however they do not give away too much.

Critic Stanley Kaufman describes as the classic opening, it shows the reality of the setting and everyday life which makes it more reliable as the audience feel like they can almost relate.

Kyle Coopers title sequence to the film Seven so effective as it illustrates what is going to happen in the films, notebooks and pictures.

Orson Welles wanted to achieve with his opening to the film A touch of Evil " All in one" take, the universal studio put music and the sequence over the orginal clip

RESEARCH-BP18 Practical Remake

                    Planning Decisions and Storyboard

Our group made the decision that 2 people should direct and 2 people should act. Kadeem and Abdul(Me) did the video recording an directed the scenes, while Onat and Abdi acted as Tom Cruise and Jason Statham. We made this decision as we thought that Kadeem and I would have a better behind the scenes input, whereas Abdi and Onat would be more suited to the acting role. We also made the decision that all of our group would get a chance to edit and put the remake together.

Script-

The script was actually quiet hard to understand as there was a lot of dialogue missing such as "You all right" and "Don't worry about it". This caused a lot of problems in the remake as what we were saying didn't actually correlate to the opening scene of 'Collateral'.  

StoryBoard

 Our group's storyboard was drawn by 'Onat Arslan' who's very accurate and detailed in his illustrations. We drew freeze frames of the main scenes in the opening of 'Collateral' and this helped to guide us in the production of our remake.

Shot list

Our groups shot list was very complex and it consisted of medium shots, close up shots, low angle shots and tracking shots. We had to continuously change the angle and type of shot for just 30 seconds of the remake, which seemed like a lot of work for such a short piece. However I feel like in the end the hard work would of paid off, and the editing would hopefully bring it together as we would be match cut the scenes making it look seamless.

What makes a good tittle sequence?

Kyle Cooper is accredited with making one of the most popular title sequences in the 90's called Seven. Kyle cooper also made good title sequence such as the spider-man movies and the superman returns. What makes a good title sequence according to Kyle Cooper is being simple and creative. He likes the idea of originality and thinks that title sequences should excite the viewers enough for them to watch the film to the end. He believes that the font used in Seven shows the genre of the film and the audience can tell that it will be mystery/thriller. Kyle Cooper likes the title sequence for Dead zone because its simple typography and the music makes the atmosphere mysterious. He also likes the title sequence for To kill a mocking bird because the main obsession is showed clearly. What Kyle Cooper means by story based in the title sequence is that that metaphor is clear and the back story pun is to do with the film. The kind of problems a studio face after and audience test screening might face are that the production team might not have enough to do another shoot or the audience might understand certain aspects. This is why title sequence become an important thing for the studio because it adds another scene and becomes a prologue. The title sequence of Dawn of the dead try to portrait fear through displaying scenes of zombies and abandoned houses.

Post Two - Prelim Evaluation

Introduction

The group I was in consisted of me, Abdi, Lama and Alexandra. Our film was set in a kitchen and our prop was a skateboard. The story was about Abdi finding a skateboard in the park and when he came to the kitchen, he was confronted by Lama because she found out that Abdi stole the skateboard from her friend.

Pre-Production – (Planning)

Overall, I thought our Pre-Production workflow was very efficient because within the 3 hour lesson, we managed to figure what role each person, our storyline and began to storyboard. When it came to filming the film all members in the group were prepared and knew what to do. Furthermore, all members contributed ideas on how we should film and the storyline.

Production – (Filming)

Overall, I thought our Production filming was quite average however, I believe there was much room for improvement. Even though we were in a very confined space and didn’t have sufficient space for the tripod to come in to the room – we still managed to great decent shots. One shot that I was no satisfied with was the tracing shot with Abdi going to the kitchen; it was very shaky and was very distracting when it came to editing and seeing it finally. The actors did especially well however, with the minor slip-ups in cues and lines however, we were short for time therefore the ending wasn’t that great.

Post-Production (Editing)

Overall, I thought our Production filming was excellent as all worked together to make the film look professional. In the first part, the rest of my group was quite confused on the actual editing however, I did help them in getting them started and we managed to edit the film within the hour and didn’t need to do any sort of extra work outside the lesson or even in the consecutive lesson.

Genre Short-list

CRIME-

We as a group choose this genre as it is very popular among our target audience which are males ageing between 25-40. Crime is a very intense genre and it is driven by its plot. It include multiple purposely left out aspects which are added to the end of the film to make it all make sense and give the audience a sense of visceral. It is an action packed genre which makes it one of our easy choices.

ACTION-

Action is a very intense and thrilling genre. Its is usually a begins with a narrative title sequence meaning that its starts at the beginning and it is developed from that initial climax which usually has a resolution at the end. We chose action as it is very plot focused and as a group we have had a unanimous liking of the genre as does our target audience so the choice of this genre is quiet obvious.

MYSTERY-

This choice of genre was quiet hard but in the end with a few ideas we excepted this genre into our short-list. Mystery is a very creative genre as shown by movies such as 'The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo'. We chose this genre not only due to our target audience but also due to personal preference as mystery has a plot that's its not very predictable giving the viewer a sense of curiosity. We thought that if we had a mysterious title sequence the audience would be urged to view on .

I researched and annotated the title opening of Kidulthood. In the opening scene the director uses different types of sound the in the opening scene. The director uses diegetic and non diegetic sounds and many examples of synchronization with image and sound. I don't think the sounds used had a great effect because there was a lot of talking from the recording on the film set.

Purpose of a title sequence

The purpose of a title sequence is used to display the cast crew who are involved in the movie making and in some sequences used to credit certain actors. Its also used to the add a sense of mystery and catch the attention of the viewers.

Title sequences display and credit the crew cast for their involvement. Title sequences are presented in a certain way to show off the big actors that are featuring in the movie. It used to hype the movie and get the viewers excited. Its all to sustain the viewers till the end of the movie . For example in

Sherlock homes, they make it clear that they have a big actor featuring in Robert Downey Jr.

Another use of a title sequence is to establish the genre of the movie. Film productions like to add mystery and excitement through the title sequence by using music. For example in the show American horror story, they use symbolic codes, colour schemes, technical codes and editing effects to promote the genre.

Evaluation

I think our filming went well because my group and I recorded our film in time and had plenty of time to edit the film. I was acting the main role in our piece. I played a boy finding a lost skateboard in the park that took It home. I think my acting well for someone who doesn't know how to. While filming, i think it was a bit hard for the cameraman to fit me and the actor it because i was taller than the actor but the cameraman did his best to fit both of our bodies fully.

The editing went well because we had plenty of time to edit and add the extra things that we could add. Our whole group contributed to the editing as we took turns and changed it up every 20 minutes. We all at first were a bit baffled on how to edit because that was our first time editing but we worked together and managed. Our final film looked good i think because we had all types shots including close

ups and over the shoulder shots.

Title sequences

There are 4 main and different types of film openings

-Titles on blank screen
-Low budget
-Effective

 Titles on a blank screen
Titles on a blank screen is the most basic form of producing your title sequence and is only used on occasions where the production team are on a budget. You see titles on a blank screen used in movies created decades ago because they were limited with technology. Its very uncomplicated and has high contrast.


Titles on still images
Titles used on a still image gives you a sense of the genre of the movie. Its much more developed than titles on a blank screen because the technology has developed hugely. Titles on a still image is used in the movie Wimbledon to grab the attention of the viewer and kind of force them to acknowledge the credits. It does this by changing the credits every time the ball is hit.

Titles over moving images don't have dialogue which could possibly confuse the viewer but the moving images could be a metaphor for something in the movie. It has a narrator talking in the background. For example in city of god, the narrator is the only one talking while things go on.










Titles using animation or motion
Titles using animation or motion is very popular for relating to the theme. The animations used in films gives you a perfect idea of whats going to happen in the movie. When using this, they use digitized technology and stylized edit. For example, in the opening title sequence of casino royal, you get a sense of the film genre and theme because they use animations such as the ace of spades to represent blood.

 My favorite title sequence is titles over moving images because i believe that it gives a great idea about what the movie is going to be about. For example the movie American horror movie uses titles over images and is very effective. The use of no dialogue adds suspension and more fear into the viewer

RESEARCH-TARGET AUDIENCE

Audience profiles for films

Me and my group decided to research the target audience for crime and mystery. A target audience is a demographic group that movie is target it so in order to attract viewers attention, they target particular people.I researched Kidulthood, the Godfather and Four lions which all have an aspect of crime in different ways. 

Kidulthood 

Demographics

 The people who liked kidulthood were surprisingly females of a young age from a range of 18 to 24. I personally thought that young males were the audience that liked kidulthood because I enjoyed it a lot and consist of male based problems at a young age. The social class that favorite kidulthood the most was the working class. This didn’t come to me as a huge surprise because in the film, it consist of a lot of working class problems so this class could relate personally relate to some of the problems in the film.

Lifestyle

The lifestyle of the viewers isn't that interesting.They like cooking, drawing and playing football.The movie displays a lot of sex and relationship related things and the audience take an interest on that topic. They also favor sports such as football and basketball and like pets like fish.

Personality

The type of people who favor kidulthood like using the social media to communicate. They like music and like to kick back in their free time. They also are understanding in situations but on occasions lazy.

Entertainment

The type of genre film that this audience like are violence based films and some comedy based films. The type of TV shows that they like aren't shows you'd think people who watch kidulthood would watch. The shows displayed are dragons den, how i met your mother and the inbetweeners. 

Godfather

Demographics

The type of generation to watch godfather are the older generation, to be precise its men from 40 to 54. The Godfather was filmed decades ago so the older generations are more likely to favor it but I love the Godfather and have watched it plenty of times. The social classes that are linked with the Godfather are upper class people and lower middle class individuals.The jobs associated with the people the audience have jobs in the government and own business.

Lifestyle/personality

The lifestyle lived by the audience is not technology based, its old fashioned. They like to play chess and scrabble which was played a lot decades ago and also like drive and play football. They live a lifestyle that reflects The Godfather. Their general interests are politics, reading the international newspaper and watching movies Their favorite sports are basketball and football. The audience are very opinionated and like newspapers that are opinionated too. They describe themselves as funny and loyal but occasions arrogant and blunt.
