Genre

What Is Genre?

Genre of a film follows the same pattern of literary genres. The genre of a film is the theme and mood it conveys. There can also be things known as sub-genres and hybrid genres where there are elements of more than one genre within the film. Sub-genres have elements of another genre while still having a main genre (action thriller) while hybrid genres are mixtures of two genres. They are determined determined by many things including: the music played, the camera angles, the lighting, the film opening titles (font), character behaviour and editing. Codes & conventions (signs which create meaning) and genre tropes can also be used to highlight genre.

This is from my favourite film, from the genre of  action, "fast and furious 7". In thisscene, there is a fight going on between two of the main characters. The scene is made tense and dramatic by many factors. The low lighting creates a tense atmosphere while the bright lightson the two characters emphasises the action,. The two men have theirarms erect in a striking stance. All this creates an adrenaline rushand entertainment for the audience.
Another one of my favourite genres is comedy. This is a scene from
the film "Ride Along" which is a comedy film starring Kevin Hart.
I prefer to watch these comedy films because they make me laugh
and also have famous comedians acting in them which appeals to
people who enjoy comedy. I can infer that this is a comedy film
from the facial expressions of the actors, a very recognisable image.

The third genre of film that I enjoy is biographical films because they contain can be a source
of information  and learning in a fun way. They usually make the audience feel certain emotions
towards the characters of the films. In this film, "12 years a slave", we are made to feel sympathy
for the characters through character behaviour, music, lighting and camera angles.
