RESEARCH- BP8 Analysis of favourite film

Goodfellas

The choice of Goodfellas which has the genre of a Biography, Crime and Drama has easily got to be my favourite film. In my opinion it was a marvellous movie which was starring Robert De Niro, Ray Liotta and Joe Pesci. It starts with the middle of the movie at the beginning giving a hint to the audience about it's narrative thread. It is said to be one of the most iconic opening sequences of all time.
Title on blank screens-
The title of the movie is on a blank screen. This is probably because it was made in the 1990's which didn't have the digital technology that we posses today. At the beginning of the sequence it shows a tracking shot from behind a vehicle on the highway in a very ominous, pitch black location denoting that it is at night however it's also connoting that something evil and violent may occur. When they stop the car to check what's making the noise its pitch black making it very hard to deduce what is happening. The red tail light shines upon the 3 males making the three men seem demonic. After someone gets killed a man narrates that he wants to be a gangster and it shows a still image of the person followed by jazz music which is a classic Martin Scorsese production cliché. Overall the type of title sequence is a stylised title sequence with titles on blank screens as it has a narration but it is also not revealing the plot or what is actually happening for that matter.

The title sequence uses non diegetic sound to intentionally make the audience follow the title on the screen as it zooms past over and over again. It use the sound of passing motorcyclist to enagage the audience and make them feel comforted and dove tailed into the movie. The music is used as the sequence is quiet bland however the movement of the title and the sound make it seem more lively and enjoyable.
