Categorizing Title Sequences
There are 4 different types of title sequences:
Titles on a blank screen
Titles on blank screens are usually used when the film being produced is on a tight budget or the movie came out a significantly long time ago where animation technology didn't exist. A good example of a title on a blank screen is Pulp fiction. The screen title is accompanied by fast pace music which connotes to the viewer that it is a fast action packed thriller which it is. Thus revealing its genre.
Titles on still images
- Titles on a blank screen
- Titles on still images
- Titles over moving images
- Titles using animation and motion

Titles on still images
Titles on still images are more elaborate than just writing on the background. In the past the titles were hand drawn onto the canvases which has shown how much technology has developed in recent years. An interesting piece of information is that the credits at the beginning of the movie are not just to show who worked on the film but it is contractual. The contract states that they need the production company, main actor/s and the staff who worked on the film to be shown.
A good example of the movie which uses titles on still images is on the film 'Wimbledon' which uses editing on the beat to somehow force the viewer intentionally to read the credits. Every time the tennis ball is served the credits change sides as well the still images moving from side to side which is really effective and flawless.
Usually on these types of title sequences there is some sort of mystery as there is no dialogue so the reader has to figure out what is actually happening. It could also be a metaphor used which may foreshadow a particular incident happening later on. An example of titles on moving images is a movie called 'Rear Window'. As the credits go on the screen the window is opening making the viewer want to know what is going to happen next giving a sense of curiosity.

Titles using Animation or motion.
Title sequences with animations are very long to edit however are very effective. They use digital technology and stylised editing to make the sequence look seamless. The movie also uses an ident to promote the production company as it is contractual and it comes at the beginning of the movie with the credits. An example of a movie which does this is 'Casino Royal' when it used poker cards as the background which connotes that the movie is in a casino which is also known by the title. The poker card design also sheds blood and the animation is used as a metaphor to show that there will be a lot of bloodshed in the movie; portraying the genre which is action.

Other types of title sequences-
Personal Favourite-
My favourite type of film sequence is titles on moving images. This is because there is no dialogue and it makes the viewer infer on what is going to happen. It is usually part of the narrative thread and it implies something else. It is my favourite as it adds a sense of mystery and it make you want to continue to watch the movie.
I have chosen Interstellar as the opening credits of my choice as it is very subtle and it cross cuts between action scenes and non action scenes which gives the viewer a sense of anxiety as they are unknowing about what is going to happen. The sense of fear engages the viewer making them want to continue watching. There is also a very high pitched cello sound which gives it a sense of tension. It is really an unpredictable movie.

Other types of title sequences-
- Narrative- integrated into the moving images
- Discrete- Same as narrative but more mysterious
- Stylised- Combination of discrete and narrative
