RESEARCH: Post Thirteen - Analyse 3 Title Sequences

Hannibal (2013)

Micro Analysis

Camera

There was a lot of panning around the animation; the majority of the shots were close up which varied in distance.

Mise-en-scene

There is a minimal amount of Mise-en-scene - it was a very simplistic yet, effective. The title sequence only consisted of two elements; an animation and the background. The background was plain white and the animation was of a person forming from a red liquid (inferring that it was blood) which gives the idea of what we expect will happen and what genre it is.

Editing

On the onset of the title sequence it fades in from a black background. Then, for each shot the cuts are very sharp also, there is a drum in the score which corresponds to sharp cuts.

Sound

The sound was effectively used to give a eerie and dangerous ambience. This was done through the use of a drone which faded in on the onset of the film correspondingly to the fade in on the video.

Macro Analysis

Form the title sequence, I can infer that it has something to do with death, crime or murder this is shown through the use of the Person forming in a (inferred) blood. This means that the only way the storyline is revealed is through the blood animation and the characters are not even introduced in this sequence. It is difficult to infer what social groups are represented however, we can infer that there is some sort of negative representation.

Title Conventions

Order:

  1. Mads Mikkelsen
  2. Hugh Dancy
  3. Caroline Dhavernas
  4. Hettienne Park
  5. AND Laurence Fishbourne
  6. Developed for television by Bryan Fuller
  7. HANNIBAL
This is a stylized title sequence because of the animation of the forming person. When the text is over a white element the text is black however, when it is on the red animation it is always white. In addition, the majority of the animations are to the side of the animation.

The Walking Dead (2013)

Macro Analysis

Form the title sequence, I can infer that it has something to do with death, survival and the "end of the world." This is shown through the use of dark colours both in the setting and the text. The storyline is introduced when is shows something at the door trying to get in the door know is shaken. Broken  objects, eerie places and shattered glass shows there is something evil and/or there has been attack.

Title Conventions

Order:

  1. AMC Presents
  2. Andrew Lincoln
  3. Jon Berntual
  4. Sarah Wayne Callies
  5. Laurie Holden
  6. Jeffrey DeMunn
  7. Steven Yeun
  8. Chandler Riggs
  9. Executive Producers Robert Kirkman and David Alpert
  10. Executive Producer Charles H. Eglee
  11. Executive Producer Gale Anne Hurd
  12. Executive Producer Frank Darabout
  13. Developed by Frank Darabout
  14. Based on the series of Graphic Novels by Robert Kirkman and Tony Moore and Charlie Adlard
  15. The Walking Dead
This is a stylized title sequence because of the setting and how each shot was blurry and dark. The fonts were very dark in colour to go with the overall theme and for each name the first name is normal and second name is bold. In the last shot where it says "The Walking Dead" it is bold and white.
