Types of Film Openings

The 4 Types of Film Openings

1. Blank screen- this is a very simple film opening and it is when the titles roll on the screen over a blank image (possibly a black screen). An example would be from "Donnie Darka".

2. Traditional- (Narrative) is when the imagery used in the opening is part of the film and setting. The set is introduced as the titles roll. An example would be "Rush Hour 2". This is my favourite type of film opening as it keeps you interested because of the questions it brings up about the rest of the film.

3.Discrete- These are openings separate to the actual film, like a mini film before the start of the actual film. It helps to create a suitable atmosphere for the start of the film. an example would be "se7en".

4. Stylised- A heavily edited, stylish, opening. An example would be "mesrine". There are multiple camera shots of the main character at the same time which gives us an impression that he is being watched carefully and sets an atmosphere.
