How can a film opening attract an audience?

Thomas Sutcliffe means that the movie should captivate the audience to stay and watch the whole movie. He mean that you shouldn't instantly arouse the viewer but to slightly intrigue and interest them to view on.

Jean Jacques Beineix says that the risk of a instant arousal are that you wont answer the audiences questions therefore you should expect the audience to wait so you can nurture their desire and afterwards the satisfaction will come.

A good beginning should make the audience want to know more about the narrative thread but also to make them slightly understand what is happening so that they stay till the end making a commitment to the movie.

Stanley Kauffmann says that a classic opening starts with an establishing shot of the location and the shot usually begins from the east. Then you get a close of the building and the camera moves upwards into the location and arrives in the reception area. This works because you know the place of movie and what the occupation of the hero is.

Kyle Coopers title sequence of the movie 'Seven' is effective as it tells a story about the obsessive nature of the characters and it also foreshadows what is going to happen which is probably death.

Orson Welles wanted to plunge the audience into the story without giving them time to prepare. He didn't want to include a title, music or credits. However Universal Studios added the credits, titles and music as they didn't want to lose the audiences attention as they though they would know too little.

The favourite trick of Film Noir is to have the ending at the beginning as it makes the audience feel like the beginning of the movie is the destination more than the departure so throughout the movie the audience feels like they're making a journey till the end.

The opening of the shining is very ominous as the camera swoops to the car like a predator from behind. This immediately tells the audience that the people in the car are travelling in the wrong direction
