What is Genre?
Genre means a specific type of film, music or writing. In this scenario I'm interested about the genre in movies. A genre of a movie has many types of purposes such as giving the director crucial information, and helps the audience to understand which category type that they enjoy the most. In movies when a producer makes a movie, they choose which genre it is. This allows them to stay focus when making the film as they know which codes and conventions to include which makes the movie more specific to their target audience. When a movie has a particular genre a consumer who has a liking for that genre is more likely to watch that movie. Thus genre helps the director to include genre tropes and conventions that their specific target audience enjoy or get aroused by.
Key Words-
Genre- Specific type of film, music or writing
Sub-Genre- When a movie of a set genre has elements of other genres.
Hybrid Genre- Blend elements of 2 or more genres (e.g ROM-COM)
Codes&Conventions- What you put in the movie to make it that genre and also what signals you give to the viewer to make the message have a meaning.
Genre Tropes- repeated symbols and style. Also known as generic signifier or clichés
When the class did task 2 we saw stills of movies with different genres and we identified the most obvious ones first. For example we saw a still of a movie called 'Goodfellas' which is one of my favourite of all time.We immediately extracted from the visual image that it was an Action, Gangster crime. This is because it included multiple generic signifier of genre tropes. This mean clichés and conventions that movies have that make it that particular genre. Once I saw alcohol, money, men in suits and guns I automatically identified what it was. Genres in the present have been so established that its almost a motif. The same conventions are used in every single movie and thus we has been sort of programmed in our memory to identify what genre a movie actually is.
Genre 1- Action
I chose action as a genre as its so fast tempo that I feel helpless but to be dragged along. In this still of this movies the conventions are gun fire, helicopters, army gear and grass. Usually on action movies it takes place on grassy land. All these convention or clichés stated above are all signifier that this movies is an action movie. I also enjoyed action movies like Die Hard.
Genre 2- Crime
I I also choose crime a it is more of a thriller movie. It is driven by the plot and its very tense as its unexpected on what is going to happen next. I got this still from the movie Goodfellas and the conventions they include are men in suits, alcohol, money and guns. Other crime movies I have enjoyed are the ocean trilogy, fast and furious and casino.
Genre 3- Mystery
I have chosen mystery as my final genre of choice as it has elements of a very dark theme and it makes the movie that little bit more interesting., The conventions used are mysterious figures,
dark backgrounds and ambiguous objects.
