What is the purpose of a title sequence-
The main purpose of a title sequence is to add a sense of mystery. It is purposely used to engage the viewer to watch the full movie till the end.
It is also used to credit the people who helped to produce the movie such as the,
- Director
- Producer
- Stylist
- Music producer
It is also used to establish the genre of the movie. For example a narrative title sequence would usually be a biography and sequences with high tempo music with fast motion is usually an action movie. The music in the films opening should adds sense of curiosity to interest the viewer.
The film opening also adds to the narrative thread for example in 'The girl with the dragon tattoo' the film opening is quiet mysterious as the audience do not know what is happening, which is an example of a discrete title sequence,which captivates the audience.
Another purpose of the film opening is to show the production company at the beginning ( i.e. the ident) so that the viewers know which company produced the movie so that they can gain publicity and credit. The ident is also contractual so it has to be put as the first thing in each movie.
